Featured Classroom
Ms. Huelskoetter - First and Second Grade
This year’s curriculum will lead us into circuits and electricity, the ocean world, and even into outer space. And who knows what other questions will come from these young wondering minds?
What We are Working On...
Reading/Writing
-
We are enjoying many different authors such as Donald Crews and Eric Carle. We are practicing books that we SING, books that rhyme, books that are predictable, and having fun with a variety of stories and poems for fluency. We are building a word wall that we cheer and explore every day.
-
So far we have enjoyed multiple books about PIRATES … How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long and David Shannon, PIRATE PETE Adventures by Kim Kennedy, Tough Boris by Mem Fox, and Shiver Me Letters by June Sobel to name a few.
Social Studies - Traveling Pals
- This year our Social Studies curriculum will include our TRAVELING PALS around the WORLD. That means we’ll collect, name, and send over 20 teddy bears with their backpacks on trips with any traveling friends we know! As they travel we’ll receive email and photos and journal entries to keep track of where they are. We’ll also ask our traveling friends to collect souvenirs for us from the various sites they’ve seen.
Writing
- Writing time has begun with making a STAR of the WEEK book about our first star. After an interview in which we collect facts and information, we each create a page for a class book. We do this every week, so that each star receives a special collectable one-of-a-kind souvenir by the AUTHORS of GRADES 1 and 2.
We are receiving letters from “Cap’n Jimmy Redbeard” from aboard his vessel the Blue Moon in a message bottle….along with 8 artifacts of his!

Our favorite subject
S.S.R.
(Super-silent reading).
Math
- Math class includes many games and activities. We count, skip count, count coins, explore telling time with the 13 different clocks in our classroom, and LOTS of work with the collection of numbers. During October we’ll be collecting the DATA for our school wide GREEN WHEELS WEDNESDAY on Oct 7 and building a graph with all the alternative ways we traveled to school (besides cars).
What is the most fun?
- For Miss H … definitely the enthusiasm and creativity that the kids bring to school each day. I love getting them to sing and move.
- For the kids... recess,
lunch,
S.S.R. (that's super silent reading),
coloring,
EVERYTHING,
homework,
math,
gym, and spanish
Science
-
Science is the part of the day when we explore the animal world, the physical world around us, and the different wonders that we find. While reading Eric Carle’s Have You Seen My Cat?, we needed to know about the cat family and where in the world they live. As we watch the weather, a discussion of vapor arises so we create an experiment to discover more about evaporation. The story of Agate led us into the many different gems found in the earth. Farmer Bob, our new friend, sent us a mystery gift box full of Indian corn , popcorn and ten commandment gourds so we’re learning about harvests and seeds. This year’s curriculum will lead us into circuits and electricity, the ocean world, and even into outer space. And who knows what other questions will come from these young wondering minds?
